Dishwasher Door Latches
When they are working properly, the dishwasher door latch is a no brainer - you don't even realize it's there. If the latch doesn't work, however, the entire dishwasher is rendered useless. The dishwasher door latch signals to the dishwasher that the door is locked and water can be released into the unit.
Replacing a Door Latch
Buying a replacement door latch for your dishwasher is not difficult. It is best to know the make and model of your dishwasher before you begin. The latch can be sold on its own or as part of a kit containing a switch, a strike plate, or a gasket. In some dishwashers, the latch and handle are one piece. Dishwasher latches usually cost between $20-$40.
Before Buying a Door Latch
There are some things to consider before buying a dishwasher latch that can save both time and money.
- Sometimes the latch stops working because debris is caught in the latch. Clean the assembly thoroughly and try it again before deciding you need a replacement.
- Sometimes the latch is out of alignment. You can adjust the alignment by loosening the screws that hold the latch in place and slightly change its position.
- Sometimes the strike plate is out of alignment. The strike plate is located above the latch and can be adjusted in the same way.
- Often door latches are made to fit a number of dishwasher models that were manufactured over a particular time period. For example, a certain door latch might fit several late model or older model dishwashers. If you know when you dishwasher was made, you have a little flexibility about what you buy as a replacement.
