Dishwasher Racks
A dishwasher rack is that rack that fits into the top and bottom of a dishwasher to hold the dishes in place for washing. Racks rest in the dishwasher on ledges, and wheels affixed to the rack roll on an axle allowing the rack to be pushed in and out for easy loading. If your dishwasher rack is working fine but is starting to rust, it is a good idea to replace it. A rusty rack won't last long in the wet environment of a dishwasher. Other problem areas include the wheels, gliders, and axles that keep the racks moving smoothly.
Another type of dishwasher rack-usually found in industrial dishwashers-is the open dishwasher rack. These "carton" shaped racks can be completely removed, filled with dishes, and returned to the dishwasher.
Replacing the Rack
In most cases, it's best to try and replace the rack with the same model that is currently in place in your dishwasher. Replacement racks can be ordered directly from the original manufacturer or from an appliance store like Sears. Name brand dishwasher racks can cost $200 or more
If you are looking for a cheaper option or are not sure of the make or model of your dishwasher, off brand dishwasher racks are also available. Make sure that the length and width of the new rack is comparable to that of the old rack. If you chose to go this route, you may also need to buy new wheels or other components as the old ones may not fit the new rack. These generic racks can be purchased for as little as $140 at some online retailers.
