General Electric Dishwashers

GE manufactures 76 models of built-in dishwashers plus four convertible models with wood grain laminate tops that provide additional work surface in the kitchen. Three models can be installed under the sink to make the most of kitchen space. A variety of exteriors are available including white, black, bisque and stainless steel as well as custom panels.

GE History

The General Electric Company was formed in 1890 by inventor Thomas Edison and business partner Charles Coffin. Its headquarters is in Fairfield, Connecticut. It is now a major defense contractor to the United States government and owns NBC Universal (television and movies). Subsidiary GE Capital is a major player in consumer financial services. In 2009, Forbes magazine named GE the largest company in the world.

Special Features of GE Dishwashers

Some models of GE dishwashers feature the SmartDispense Technology which, according to GE, holds 47 ounces of detergent and dispenses the correct amount with each load based on water-hardness settings. Other options include steam wash, 24-hour start delay, hidden controls, movable upper racks, and single rack wash for smaller loads.

Energy Efficiency

Twenty-three GE dishwashers meet the EnergyStar requirements including three models in the Adora line, one in the Caf line, two in the Eterna line, five in the Monogram line and twelve in the Profile product line.

Consumer Experience

GE has had three dishwasher recalls in recent years. 74,000 units sold between January 2004 and February 2005 were recalled for posing a fire hazard to consumers as a connector could short-circuit and overheat during normal use. Two and a half million built-in dishwashers which had been manufactured between 1997 to 2001 were recalled in May 2007 as they also presented a fire hazard. In an earlier recall, dated October 1999, GE recalled dishwashers manufactured between 1983 and 1989. Not all models were affected by these recalls. Consumers should check the GE website to identify whether a particular unit is affected.
