Refrigerator Condenser Fan
Refrigerator condenser fans are used in "frost-free" refrigerators. The fan is designed to run when the compressor runs. It takes in air from outside the refrigerator and cools off the compressor and the refrigerator coils. The fan pulls the air in and pushes it out through the front grill and also evaporates water in the refrigerator drain pan.
Buying a Condenser Fan
The most likely reason for replacing a condenser fan is that the motor has stopped running properly or has completely died. The problem could also be the fan blades themselves which are inexpensive to replace. If the fan motor is the problem, expect to pay somewhere in the $40 range to replace the motor. Fan blades usually cost under $10 in most cases. As with most other appliances, condenser fans are generally brand specific. Most often, though, the condenser fan parts fit several models of that manufacturer.
How to Buy a Condenser Fan
To buy a condenser fan, you should first determine if you need to replace the entire fan or if just one of the components needs to be replaced. If you need the entire fan with all of its components, it is best to order directly from the manufacturer where you will be able to get the motor, blades, mounting brackets and any other necessary mounting parts. If you just need a motor, blades, or hardware separately, you can buy them from the manufacturer or from a retailer who sells appliance parts.
- Most motors will come with hardware such as mounting brackets, but you should check to be sure when purchasing so you'll be able to install your new part immediately
- If buying fan blades, make sure that the blades are the same or similar model to the rest of the condenser fan so they work properly once installed.
Who Sells Condenser Fans
Condenser fans are sold by Frigidaire, GE, Whirlpool, Kenmore, and other manufacturers. Often parts will work on more than one brand. For example, a condenser fan motor sold by Maytag may also indicate that it will work on Whirlpool or Kenmore refrigerators.
